New Homes & New Paints

New builds, extensions and renovations

New work is unforgiving. There is no previous coat hiding anything, so every join, screw head and cornice line shows if the preparation is rushed. It is the work John enjoys most, because the finish is entirely down to the painter.

How we approach it

New Homes & New Paints — the detail that matters

New plaster gets sealed properly

Fresh plasterboard and cornice soak up paint unevenly. It gets a proper sealer-undercoat first, then is sanded before topcoats. Skipping that step is why some new homes look patchy in raking light.

Sharp lines where trades meet

Cornice lines, door frames and skirting returns are where new work is judged. We cut in by hand — no sloppy tape lines, no paint on the new flooring.

We work to a program

On a build you're coordinating trades. We turn up when we said we would, tell you honestly how many days we need, and get out of the way of the next trade on time.

Handover and defects

We come back for touch-ups after the other trades have finished knocking things about. That's part of the job, not an extra.

Questions

New Homes & New Paints FAQs

Do you work for owner-builders?

Yes, and it is a good chunk of what we do. We will walk you through what the painting stage involves, when we need to be on site relative to the other trades, and what you can do yourself to keep costs down.

How many coats do new walls get?

A sealer-undercoat plus two topcoats is the standard we work to on new plasterboard. Some builders specify a one-coat-plus-touch-up system; we will quote what you ask for but we will tell you what we would do in your house.

Can you paint before the flooring goes down?

That is usually the ideal sequence — it means we can be less precious around the floor line and you get a cleaner result. We will fit in with whatever your build program requires.
